The Future of Information Alliance
"Future-ists" from Google, Twitter and Microsoft came together on campus during the week of November 14, 2011 to inaugurate the Future of Information Alliance. The FIA was created to help identify challenges and opportunities arising from the evolving role of information in our lives -- and then to serve as a catalyst for research, innovation and action. On the evening of Tuesday, November 15, the Newseum in Washington, D.C. hosted a major event that brought together the university community and beyond to discuss with Google's "Director of User Happiness" Dan Russell, Microsoft human-computer interaction researcher Mary Czerwinski and former chief scientist at Twitter Abdur Chowdhury the key information challenges that exist and brainstorm ways to address those challenges through research and collaboration.
This FIA special program was broadcast on MPT - Maryland Public Television - on Tuesday, June 19 at 11p.m. on MPT2. Comcast users in Baltimore and the Washington, DC region can watch on channel 268. Verizon customers can watch MPT2(also called MPT Select) on channel 480. On RCN turn to channel 44 and Cox customers in Northern Virgina can watch on channel 812. Check this MPT website for complete channel listings.
The hour-long special is also available for viewing online and will be shown on UMTV. Videos of each days FIA sessions during the week of November 14 are available on the FIA website.
Research Matters
The University's newest production is called Research Matters. The program brings together some of Maryland's top faculty experts to talk about one issue. The first edition focuses on the Chesapeake Bay - its environmental and ecological challenges - and what the University of Maryland is doing to return the state's most precious national resource to health and prosperity. Research Matters can be viewed anytime online.
