Paul S. Herrnson is director of the Center for American Politics and Citizenship, Professor in the Department of Government and Politics, and Distinguished Scholar-Teacher at the University of Maryland. He has published numerous books, including Voting Technology:The Not-So-Simple Act of Casting a Ballot, Congressional Elections: Campaigning at Home and in Washington, The Financiers of Congressional Elections, and War Stories from Capitol Hill. He has written more than 100 journal articles and book chapters and is the editor of the Real Politics in America book series with Pearson Longman.

The principal investigator of a Maryland State Board of Elections funded project to run the Maryland Elections Center, research Maryland campaign finance and voting, and provide and analyze a mechanism for delivering absentee ballots via the internet, Dr. Herrnson also has directed a National Science Foundation and Carnegie Corporation project to study voting technology and ballot design, a U.S. Election Assistance Commission project to recruit, train, and retain election judges, and the Campaign Assessment and Candidate Outreach Project, funded by the Pew Charitable Trusts. His current interests include Congress, political parties and elections, money and politics, and voting technology and ballot design.

Dr. Herrnson has served as President of the Southern Political Science Association and as an American Political Science Association Congressional Fellow. He is currently President of the American Political Science Association's section on Political Organizations and Parties.

He has received several teaching awards, including an Excellence in Teaching Award from the University of Maryland's College of Behavioral and Social Sciences. He has advised the U.S. Congress, the Maryland General Assembly, the Federal Election Commission, and numerous governmental and nongovernmental organizations.
