Swine Influenza
The University of Maryland has a number of experts who can address different issues related to the ongoing swine flu epidemic:
Dean Don Kettl - Public Policy (Kettl@umd.edu) - "This is an issue that has swept around the world in lightning speed. At a food cart on the streets of Philadelphia yesterday, two people were talking about the coming plague - and the need to read the Bible. This isn't Armageddon- the government faces a keen test of calibrating its response and the people's reaction. How can we best signal the level of seriousness of the issue to ensure the best preparedness and caution without creating panic?
We've long known that a genuine pandemic could strike fast and hit hard. Especially in the aftermath of the 2001 anthrax attacks and SARS, the government has spent a lot of time and energy quietly preparing for the possibility of biothreats, either from nature or from terrorists. From all indications, the preparations were thorough and the nation is ready. But this could prove the first real acid test."
See: Kettl's analysis of the first 100 days
Daniel Perez - Swine and avian flu vaccine development, virus transmission, and pathogenesis; swine as an intermediary species for mutation and transmission of flu strains between birds and humans.
Steven Salzberg - Sequencing the flu genome
Galit Shmueli - Flu surveillance
Jeffrey Herrmann - Software to pinpoint mass vaccination locations

|
|
|
|
Expertise Key Words:
Operations research, homeland security, emergency preparedness, bioterrorism, public health, decision making, production scheduling, industrial engineering, systems engineering, vaccination clinics, health care operations
|
|
|
Expertise Credentials:
Jeffrey W. Herrmann is an associate professor at the University of Maryland, where he holds a joint appointment with the Department of Mechanical Engineering and the Institute for Systems Research. He is the director of the Computer Integrated Manufacturing Laboratory. He is a member of INFORMS, ASME, IIE, SME, and ASEE.
Dr. Herrmann has led applied research projects supported by NSF, NIST, ONR, the Semiconductor Research Corporation, the U.S. Air Force, the U.S. Army Tank-Automotive Command, Lockheed Martin Missiles and Space, Harris Semiconductor, Northrop Grumman Electronic Sensors and Systems Division, Black & Decker, and other manufacturers in the state of Maryland. The total funding of these projects is over $3 million.
For example, Dr. Herrmann has worked with Montgomery County, MD and with the federal government on terrorism/disaster exercises. His specialty in this area is mass vaccination health clinics. He has developed software that can help local governments improve the way they set up mass vaccination clinics for influenza (like H1N1) or other illnesses so that people are served more efficiently and quickly, which could help reduce panic and save lives.
Dr. Herrmann has written over 50 book chapters, journal articles, and papers in refereed conference proceedings.
Dr. Herrmann earned his B.S. in applied mathematics from Georgia Institute of Technology. As a National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellow from 1990 to 1993, he received his Ph.D. in industrial and systems engineering from the University of Florida. His dissertation investigated production scheduling problems motivated by semiconductor manufacturing. He held a post-doctoral research position in the Institute for Systems Research from 1993 to 1995.
