|
|
|
Expertise Key Words:
earthquakes

magma dynamics
mid-ocean ridges
subduction zones
geology of Venus
geology of Mars
geology of icy satellites
|

Expertise Credentials:
I am developing theoretical models of deformation of the lithosphere of the Earth and other planets.
During my PhD, I modeled the generation of faults on Earth (Central Indian Ocean), Mars, Venus (Wrinkle Ridges), and icy satellites (rifts). A recently funded NASA project will looks at the generation of fault sets on Venus, Mars, Ganymede, and Enceladus. A paper is under review that describes models of wrinkle ridges on Mercury
I have developed description of microstructural evolution, especially grain size evolution and fabric development in rocks as they accumulate high strain to understand the generation of faults and shear zones. These models are being tested agains records of ground motion over weeks to years following major eathquakes. This also has strong impplications for earthquake hazards.
Much of my recent work has addressed mantle flow at mid-ocean ridges and subduction zones. A currently funded NSF-EAR project looks are seismic anisotropy, a method to detect mantle flow, in subduction zone. A paper is under review that explains the gap in the Ring of Fire near Anchorage using mantle flow patterns. A NSF-OCE project will look at where magma is generated at mid-ocean ridges, especially the East Pacific Rise and the Juan de Fuca ridge, and determine the influence of large-scale mantle flow and changes in plate boundary geometry on mantle melting and the generation of oceanic crust. Another NSF-OCE project has been modeling similar project at some of the slowest spreading centers on Earth, I published a paper on this in 2007, and more is under preparation. As part of this project, I also modeled the interaction between oceanic ridge segments when they are close to one another, to understand the evolution of regions where three tectonic plates meet.
