Food Safety Experts Including salmonella and E-Coli - University of Maryland

The University of Maryland has a number of faculty experts who can talk about food safety issues across a wide range of topics.

Professor Nick Zimmerman specializes in turkey-related issues and is a good expert to talk to about turkey and food safety issues.

JIFSAN - the Joint Institute for Food Safety and Nutrition - is focused on issues surrounding food safety.

The Maryland Pathogen Research Institute is another excellent resource.

The university 's new Center for Food Safety and Security Systems, directed by Robert L. Buchanan, is addressing the security of food supplies and systems from the field to the dinner table, with an emphasis on food manufacturing. Center researchers are looking at potential threats, such as bioterriorism and intentional contamination, to the nation's food supply and will work closely with the Department of Homeland Security, the Food and Drug Administration's Center for Food Safety and Applied Nutrition and the Department of Agriculture.

Expertise Credentials:
Rob Sprinkle is a physician and policy scholar. He studied history at Dartmouth College and medicine at the University of Cincinnati. He trained clinically at the University of Virginia and the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center, Dallas, and is a diplomate of both the American Board of Family Medicine and the American Board of Pediatrics and a Fellow of the respective academies. He earned his second doctorate, the PhD, at the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs, Princeton University. He joined the University of Maryland School of Public Policy in 1995 and was promoted to a tenured associate professorship in 2001. He is the author or coauthor of papers in clinical medicine, bioethics, health policy, bioengineering, environmental policy, political theory, and biosecurity and is the author of one book, PROFESSION OF CONSCIENCE: THE MAKING AND MEANING OF LIFE-SCIENCES LIBERALISM (Princeton University Press, 1994), an intellectual history of political-ethical thought in the life sciences. He was Editor-in-Chief of POLITICS AND THE LIFE SCIENCES from 2001 to 2008 and is now Contributing Editor for Electronic Publishing. He spent the 2007-2008 academic year on sabbatical at Dartmouth, where he held visiting positions in Ethics, in Public Policy, and in Pediatrics.
