Continuing U.S. and World Economic Crisis

The University of Maryland has a number of economic experts available to comment on the continuing financial crisis in the U.S. and around the world..

For example, Carmen Reinhart is an expert in financial crises and the history of financial crises. Historian David Sicilia is an expert of the Federal Reserve and the Greenspan era.

Tyser Teaching Fellow, Prof. Elinda Kiss, in the Smith School of Business says: "The government made the correct decision not to bail out Lehman. If Wall Street wants deregulation and government out of its hair when it is making money engaging in riskier activities then it should not expect the government to come to its rescue when it falters. Yes, there is turmoil today, but ultimately survivors will be stronger if the moral hazard is eliminated or lessened. The moral hazard was that Wall Street engaged in risky activities, expecting to make huge profits yet expecting a government stop-gap if they did not."

Feel free to contact the experts directly or contact University Communications: 301-405-4621 or 301-257-0073 (after-hours).
