Election Night Watch and Post-Election Analysis Features Top UMD Faculty Experts

Election NightWHAT:
The University of Maryland will hold an election night watch party with faculty present to lead panel discussions and answer questions, and two post-election 2012 events to discuss not only what happened, but the impact of the election going forward.

The Election Night Watch is sponsored by the College of Behavioral and Social Sciences and its Dean's Student Advisory Council.

Post-Election Analysis: The first event is sponsored by the Saul Stern Professor of Civic Engagement at the School of Public Policy, the second - on Tuesday, November 13 - by the Department of Government and Politics (Behavioral and Social Sciences) along with the Honors College and University Libraries.

BACKGROUND:

Election Watch 2012 Party: Along with watching the returns, faculty from the department of Goverment and Politics will be on hand to lead panel discussions, answer questions and conduct mini-lectures. Faculty include:
  • Dylan Selterman (Psychology) & Scott Roberts (Psychology) (group polarization);
  • Robert Koulish (Government and Politics/Center for American Politics and Citizenship);
  • Ethan Kaplan (Economics),
  • Michael Spivey (Government and Politics)(panel discussion on Citizens United/Finances);
  • Ian Ward (Government and Politics)(racial divide in elections)
The School of Public Policy "Post-Election Conversation" Event will feature:

  • Stern EventModerator I.M. "Mac" Destler - Saul Stern Professor of Civic Engagement;
  • Chris Foreman - professor and director of the social policy program at the University of Maryland's School of Public Policy;
  • Jeremy Rosner - Executive Vice President at Greenberg Quinlan Rosner in Washington, D.C.

The Department of Government and Politics Post-Election Panel Discussion Event will feature:

  • Government and Politics EventProfessor and Chair Irwin Morris (Presidential Election);
  • Assistant Professor Kristina Miler (Congressional Elections);
  • Professor and Director of CAPC Paul Herrnson (Campaign Finance);
  • Assistant Professor Brian McKenzie (The African American Vote and the Religious Vote);
  • Assistant Professor Stella Rouse (The Latino Vote);
  • Associate Professor Mike Hanmer (Voting Reform or the Youth Vote);
  • Professor and director of the social policy program Chris Foreman (School of Public Policy) (Impact of the Election on the Future of Social Policy);
  • Visiting Associate Professor and CAPC Research Fellow Rob Koulish (Impact of the Election on the Future of Immigration Policy)
